Recent years have seen an enormous increase in corded ware settlement plans in the northern Alpine wetland areas, especially at Lake Zurich (2750-2400 cal BC). Long lasting sites with continuous building activities over several decades existed next to short-living ones at the same time and in the same region. Sites also differ in house size and house numbers, orientation towards each other and the lake, and construction techniques. With the help of dendroarchaeological analyses human impact on the hinterland of Lake Zurich and forest management systems can also be proven in times when no settlements are known at the lakeshores.
The contribution will present the most important new settlement plans and discuss approaches to interpret intra- and inter-site settlement patterns and diversity, the connection between lakeshores and hinterland and possible connections between land use systems and settlement dynamics.
